Today is the Women’s Memorial March – not to be confused with Red Dress Day, though both honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
The Vancouver march, now in its 33rd year, began in 1992 after the murder of Cheryl Ann Joe, a shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation woman and mother of three. Like so many Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing and/or been murdered, her death was met with indifference from law enforcement and the media. In response, her family and community gathered at the site where her body was found to mourn. That moment of grief has since grown into a powerful movement of remembrance and resistance.
If you would like to attend Maple Ridge’s Women’s Memorial March, please join us on February 14th from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm at Memorial Peace Park (11930 224th Street).
